What are reusable pages?
Some combinations of pages are used in more than one intervention (e.g., the pages of a progressive muscle relaxation or the thought record). Content like this can be used to work towards many different goals and in the treatment of many complaints or disorders. With this feature a CMS editor can group pages into a set of 'reusable pages'. These are separate, stand-alone entities that can be added to as many modules as necessary, without having to duplicate the content. If something needs to be updated, it will only need to be adjusted in one place.
There is one important guideline in determining if a set of pages should be made reusable: Does this combination of pages exist in 2 or more places in the catalogue?
If a combination of pages exists in more than one module or more than once in the same module, then it qualifies as reusable content. If you find yourself copying something, you should wonder why you aren't using the reusable pages feature. When deciding to make a set of pages that only exist in a few places reusable, consider whether these pages are truly necessary for your module, because we want the 'reusable catalogue' to remain manageable.
How to develop reusable pages
The following steps will guide you through the development of your reusable pages.
1. Always start with a concept
Always create a concept of your reusable pages, before developing them in the CMS. This will help you to consider the exact scope and content of the pages and to make sure they will fit everywhere. When you're basing your reusable pages on existing content, reviewing the different versions of the content will also help you benefit from best practices.
Step 1: Search for (all) comparable content in existing modules. What has already been developed?
Step 2: Consider the different versions of the existing content. Which elements can you use? And which elements are no longer fitting?
What if you need two comparable sets of reusable pages?
Sometimes you'll realise that one set of reusable pages simply doesn't fit in all existing places. There are exceptions for which you still need several similar sets of reusable pages, in order to meet the needs of different target groups (e.g. a short & simple vs an extensive version of the thought record or a body scan for relaxation vs a body scan for mindfulness). This is the only exception to the never-copy-paste rule. These decisions shouldn't be made lightly, so please discuss them with your team.
2. Create reusable pages in the CMS
In the content-section of the platform, click on '+ create'.
Choose the option 'reusable pages'.
3. Give your reusable pages a title
Make sure the title is recognisable and easily detectable. Ask yourself: would an editor be able to easily find this in the reusable pages catalogue? Keep the titles short and maintain uniformity. The Minddistrict guidelines are:
- Start psycho-educational pages with 'P-E' followed by the subject.
- If the pages include both psycho-education and an exercise start with 'P-E + exercise'.
- In some cases more descriptive titles are fitting: 'Generic evaluation'.
- Start diary introductions with 'Introduction diary 'TITLE'.
4. Edit the content of your reusable pages
Edit the pages according to your concept. The editor looks the same as the editor you're used to, with the only distinction that there's no option to add chapters or reusable content.
5. Do a final check
Ask yourself the following questions, in order to do a final check on your reusable pages:
- Would you be able to add the pages to all relevant modules and for all relevant target groups?
- Will the 'average' end user feel acknowledged and will they recognise themselves in the pages? We know it can't be perfect for everyone, but he goal is resonate with most of our users.
When you've done your check and your pages are ready to go, make sure to commit, release and publish them.
6. Add the reusable pages to a module
Step 1: go to the edit mode of the specific module. Once you've found the place you want to add the reusable page to, choose the reusable pages icon.
Step 2: On the right side of the screen, you can select the reusable page you want to add. You can use the search bar to search for a specific title or ID. If you've found the pages you're looking for, add them by choosing 'insert'.
Step 3: After you've inserted the pages into the module, note that you won't see the actual pages pop up. In the middle of the screen you'll see the title of the reusable pages you added and a button that says 'view'. If you click on that, you'll be redirected towards the view-only version of the reusable page. Here you are able to see the actual content of the reusable page.
What to do when there are updates in reusable pages?
It might happen that reusable pages are updated. It is important to know that changes made in a reusable page will not automatically be updated within modules with that reusable page.
To illustrate: I have a reusable page which is called Breathing exercise. This exercise is used in 8 different modules. I update this set of reusable pages because I want to add an instruction video for example. This update will not automatically be updated in the 8 modules where this exercise is used. I need to execute this update in every module separately.
Because of this, it is recommended to keep track in which modules certain reusable pages are being used.
How to update reusable pages
The following steps will guide you through the steps to update reusable pages.
1. Make the changes in your reusable pages
Make the desired changes in your reusable pages.
2. Commit, release and publish these changes
Commit, release and publish the changes in the CMS. It is not necessary to do a release request to the Minddistrict Servicedesk to go to step 3.
3. Update the reusable pages in all the modules
Go to the modules (in the CMS) where the reusable page is being used. Click on the reusable page. You will now see that you can update the reusable page here. Click on 'update'. Commit, release and publish the module in the CMS. The module is automatically updated on the platforms where the content is activated.
Do you use Minddistrict reusable pages in your modules? We will inform you about updates in the monthly release notes. Please monitor this and follow step 3 and 4 in order to have these changes in your modules as well!
